Putting on a wetsuit for the first time can feel like a challenge. It’s snug, a bit awkward, and the sensation of being wrapped in neoprene is unlike anything else. But once you get used to it, a wetsuit becomes your best friend in the water—whether you’re surfing, diving, swimming, or paddleboarding. Here’s how to make that first experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Choose the right wetsuit

The key to a good first experience is finding a wetsuit that fits your body and the water conditions where you’ll be using it. A wetsuit should fit snugly but not so tight that it restricts your breathing or movement.

  • Thickness: For summer conditions in most U.S. coastal areas, a 3/2 mm suit (3 mm in the torso, 2 mm in the arms and legs) is usually enough. For spring or fall, go for 4/3 mm or 5/4 mm. The colder the water, the thicker the suit you’ll need.
  • Fit: The suit should seal well around your neck, wrists, and ankles to keep water from flushing in. Try on a few brands—fit can vary a lot.
  • Zipper style: A front-zip suit often gives better flexibility, while a back-zip is easier to get on and off.

A good wetsuit should feel like a second skin—supportive but not restrictive.

How to put it on without a struggle

Getting into a wetsuit can feel like a workout the first time, but there are tricks to make it easier:

  1. Start with your feet. Roll the suit down to the waist and slide one foot in at a time. A plastic bag over your foot can help it glide through.
  2. Pull it up gradually. Make sure the neoprene sits smoothly without folds or bunching.
  3. Slip in your arms one at a time. Lift your shoulders to help the suit settle into place.
  4. Zip up last. Don’t hesitate to ask for help the first time—especially with a front-zip suit.

Avoid using your fingernails or wearing jewelry while putting it on, as neoprene can tear easily.

Get used to the feeling in the water

When you first step into the water, you’ll feel a quick chill as a thin layer of water seeps in between your skin and the suit. That’s normal—and it’s how the suit works. Your body warms that layer, creating insulation that keeps you comfortable.

Take a few minutes to move around and let your body adjust. You’ll soon notice that you’re staying much warmer than you expected.

A good tip: try wearing your wetsuit in the shower or a backyard pool before heading to the ocean. It helps you get used to the sensation without the distraction of waves or cold wind.

Stay warm before and after your session

Even though a wetsuit keeps you warm in the water, you can cool down quickly once you’re out. Always have a towel, a warm hoodie, and maybe a beanie ready for afterward.

If you’re going in and out of the water multiple times, keep the suit on and throw a windbreaker or poncho over it during breaks.

After use, rinse your wetsuit in fresh water and hang it to dry in the shade. This prevents salt buildup, odor, and cracking, helping it last longer.

Learn to move naturally

A wetsuit slightly limits your range of motion, especially around the shoulders and hips. That’s normal—it just takes a little getting used to.

Before you hit the water, do a few stretches: roll your shoulders, twist your torso, and bend forward. This loosens the neoprene and helps you move more freely.

If you’re surfing, swimming, or diving, practice a few movements on land while wearing the suit. It helps you find your rhythm and feel more comfortable once you’re in the water.

Make it a positive experience

The most important thing when wearing a wetsuit for the first time is to take it slow and be patient with yourself. Most people are surprised by how quickly they adapt to the snug fit.

After a few sessions, you’ll hardly notice you’re wearing it—you’ll just be focused on the fun.

And remember: a wetsuit isn’t just gear, it’s your ticket to enjoying the ocean year-round. With the right fit, a little practice, and a good attitude, it’ll soon feel like a natural part of your time in the water.
