But cold water brings serious risks that many people underestimate. Every year, accidents happen because boaters, paddlers, and swimmers misjudge how quickly cold water can sap body heat and strength. Whether you’re in a kayak, on a SUP board, in a small boat, or taking a winter dip, it’s essential to understand how cold water affects your body – and how to stay safe.
Cold Water Changes Everything
When water temperatures drop below 60°F (about 15°C), your body reacts strongly to the cold. At 50°F, you can lose muscle control in just a few minutes, and in water below 40°F, you may lose consciousness before you can call for help. Many people assume they can swim to shore if they fall in, but cold shock, rapid breathing, and exhaustion make that nearly impossible.
That’s why cold-water safety isn’t just about swimming ability – it’s about prevention, preparation, and knowing what to do if you end up in the water.
Dress for the Water, Not the Weather
A sunny spring day can be deceiving. The air may feel warm, but the water can still be near freezing. The golden rule is simple: Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.
- Wear a wetsuit or drysuit when the water is below 60°F. A wetsuit traps a thin layer of water that your body warms, while a drysuit keeps you completely dry and blocks wind chill.
- Add a hat and gloves. Up to 30% of body heat can be lost through your head, and your hands are vital for gripping paddles or climbing back aboard.
- Always wear a life jacket (PFD). Even strong swimmers can lose strength quickly in cold water. A life jacket keeps you afloat and buys you precious time.
Also think about how you’ll get back on board or out of the water. A small ladder, a rope, or a nearby buddy can make all the difference.
Know Your Limits – and the Forecast
Cold water demands planning. Always check the weather, wind, and water temperature before heading out. Even a light breeze can create waves that make re-entry difficult.
Set realistic goals for your trip, and avoid going out alone. If you do go solo, tell someone your route and expected return time. Consider using a marine radio, GPS tracker, or safety app so rescuers can locate you quickly if something goes wrong.
If You Fall In – Stay Calm
If you end up in cold water, the most important thing is to stay calm. The first seconds can feel like a shock, but try to control your breathing. Panic and frantic movement increase heat loss.
- Float and breathe. Give your body a minute to adjust to the cold.
- Conserve energy. Don’t try to swim long distances – it will exhaust you quickly.
- Stay with your craft. It’s easier to spot a kayak or board than a person in the water.
- Climb up if possible. Even getting partially out of the water reduces heat loss.
Once you’re out, get dry and warm as soon as possible. Hypothermia can continue to develop even after you’re back on land.
Train and Prepare
Knowing how your body reacts to cold water can be a lifesaver. Many boating and rescue organizations across the U.S. offer cold-water safety training, where you can safely experience the effects of cold water under supervision. It builds both respect for the elements and confidence in your ability to respond.
Practice re-entering your kayak or board in calm conditions, ideally with others nearby. The more familiar you are with your gear and your limits, the safer you’ll be when conditions turn challenging.
