Accuracy is the foundation of consistent golf. Whether you’re struggling to hit the fairway, missing short putts, or losing focus on key shots, targeted drills can make a real difference. This guide offers a series of simple yet effective golf exercises designed to sharpen your accuracy—both technically and mentally—so you can elevate your game one swing at a time.

Start with the Short Game

The short game is where most strokes are gained or lost. Many golfers focus on long drives, but it’s the shots around the green that truly define your score.

  • Target Chipping – Place three towels at different distances from the edge of the green and aim to land your ball on each one. This builds your feel for distance and trajectory.
  • Pitching with Variation – Alternate between clubs such as a pitching wedge and a sand wedge, adjusting the height of your shots. You’ll learn how small changes in grip and swing affect ball flight.
  • Focused Putting – Set three balls in a triangle around the hole, about three feet away. Try to sink all three in a row. This drill improves both precision and concentration under pressure.

Find Rhythm in Your Swing

A consistent swing isn’t just about power—it’s about rhythm and balance. Clean contact comes from a controlled, repeatable motion.

  • Tempo Drill – Count “one-two” with your swing: “one” on the backswing, “two” on the follow-through. This helps you maintain a smooth tempo and avoid rushing.
  • One-Leg Balance – Stand on one leg and make half-swings. This challenges your stability and strengthens the muscles that keep your body steady through impact.
  • Mirror Practice – Practice your swing in front of a mirror to observe your body movement. It builds awareness and helps correct small setup errors.

Train Accuracy from the Tee

When you’re on the tee box, it’s all about combining power with control. Narrowing your focus can make a big difference.

  • Small Target Focus – Pick a very specific target in the distance—like a tree branch or a yardage marker—instead of aiming for the whole fairway. This sharpens your concentration and improves aim.
  • Three-Ball Drill – Hit three balls with the same club and try to land them as close together as possible. This trains your ability to repeat a consistent swing.
  • Controlled Power – Swing at about 80% of your maximum effort. You’ll often find the ball flies straighter and nearly as far—because you’re maintaining control.

Mental Training: Build Calm and Focus

Golf is as much a mental game as it is a technical one. The ability to stay calm and focused on each shot is key to accuracy.

  • Visualization – Before each shot, picture the ball’s flight and landing spot. This helps your brain prepare the movement and increases your chances of hitting the target.
  • Pre-Shot Routine – Develop a consistent routine before every shot. It might include a couple of deep breaths, a look at your target, and one practice swing. A routine builds confidence and steadiness.
  • Short Memory – Learn to let go of bad shots. Note what went wrong, then move on with renewed focus. This is one of the most valuable mental skills in golf.

Practice with Purpose

To get the most out of your training, practice with intention. Set specific goals for each session—like sinking 7 out of 10 putts from six feet or landing 5 out of 10 chips within three feet of the hole. Track your results so you can see your progress over time.

Variety is also essential. Mix technical drills, accuracy exercises, and mental routines so you’re training your entire game—not just one part of it.

From Practice to Course

When you take your drills to the course, focus on transferring the calm and technique from practice into play. Start each round with a few easy swings that emphasize rhythm and balance rather than distance. This helps you find your groove from the very first hole.

Remember, accuracy doesn’t come overnight. It’s the result of many small improvements—in technique, focus, and confidence—that ultimately make the biggest difference in your game.
